Colcemid forhindrer den formation af den spindle responsible til celle division during den process af mitosis, resulting i en celle cyklus arrest og en increase i celle metaphases. Det allows chromosomes at være separated til cytogenic studies og i vitro diagnostisk assays.
One anvendelse af colcemid opløsning er den harvesting lymphocytes kultur i metaphase til in-situ hybridization assays.
